Lab 4 · Survive overload and a failed worker

Suggested preparation: Lab 3 · Decide whether to split prefill and decode

Picture it

Think of a submarine springing a leak. The goal isn't to pretend the ocean doesn't exist, but to ensure the bulkheads seal, the pumps engage, and the crew breathes. A robust system doesn't panic and flood the other compartments by endlessly retrying doomed actions; it contains the damage, cancels the compromised tasks, and keeps the rest of the ship afloat.

What to understand

  • Admission, retry limits, cancellation, canary rollback
  • Failure injection and per-tenant SLOs

Make it concrete

In a test environment, inject a burst, a slow client, and a worker death. Deliver the incident timeline, rejected/duplicated work counts, cache cleanup evidence, recovery time, and the changed runbook.

You understand it when…

Did recovery create more load than the original failure?
